Artist Statement

The imperfect nature of observation, chaos and control have been central themes in my work for the last couple decades, revolving around a love of the clarity and energy of line.  It both intersects and binds together, Delineates and obscures.  The dripped, calligraphic line used in my work has a flowing, dimensional character- a materiality and textural presence that creates the framework around which most of the work evolves.  The drip technique has ties to the practice of continuous contour line drawing, a practice where the connection between observation and the artists hand is described through imperfect and free-flowing drawing.  It is a way of calibrating the hand and the eye that also belies an organic and searching thought process. The linework stands alone or contains washes and patches of reverberating color, sometimes sanded down to create multiple overlapping layers that are best observed in person.
