Sarah Knouse - Artists - FERRARA SHOWMAN GALLERY

Artist Statement

Through her art making practice, Sarah Knouse combines notions of quotidian household
surroundings with those of the ephemeral and surreal. Her most recent body of mixed media
sculpture expresses the exquisite messiness inherent in the process of personal growth. Inspired
by the profound transformation of motherhood, this sculptural series reflects the contrasting
sensations of erasure and accretion experienced by the recontextualization of one’s body and
selfhood. Sifting through the residue of memory and stitching together artifacts of domesticity,
Knouse looks toward both the past and the future to ask, “Who am I now?” “Aesthetically, these
sculptures were inspired by objects found in nature which bear the visible markings of ongoing
transformation, such as the steady drip of stalagmite cave formations and the Banyan tree’s
complex root system. The Banyan reveals the story of one living organism being overtaken by
another in a manner that walks the line between symbiotic and parasitic. The tangle of
intertwined materials left behind by this process is a testament to the beauty and chaos of
constant change.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
2023-current Founding Instructor of Visual Arts, The Greene School, West Palm Beach, FL

Beginning in 2023, I am serving as the founding instructor of art for this growing college preparatory school including designing
and implementing courses in mixed media sculptural techniques, ceramics, drawing and painting, wood and metal working,
sewing/garment design, portfolio development, and student-centered independent studies such as clay animation. I’m also
currently designing curriculum for two cornerstone arts classes entitled “Art and Entrepreneurship: Design Thinking and
Prototype Development” and “Art and Activism: Building Community-Engaged Projects” to be a featured part of next year’s
expanded upper school course offerings.

2021-2022 Lecturer of Art & Design, North East Scotland College, Aberdeen, UK

In fall of 2021 and spring of 2022, I designed and taught a comprehensive studio arts course for teenage and adult learners.
Topics included foundational art making skills, exploration of 2D and 3D art media, sketchbook maintenance, design elements,
project discussion/critique, and more.

2021-2022 3D Art Studio Technician/College Portfolio Aide, Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen, UK

Duties included managing the studio spaces and daily operations of the Visual Arts Department such as firing clay and glass
fusing kilns, providing instruction to students and staff on processes related to artistic techniques in wheel throwing/glass
slumping/casting, aiding students with ongoing project development, mounting regular exhibitions, documenting student
artworks and digitally editing/curating portfolios for university submissions. I also participated in GCSE Art and Design
portfolio assessments.

2013- 2021 Instructor of 3D Arts/Head of Visual Arts Department, Oxbridge Academy, West Palm Beach, FL

For 8 years I served as the founding instructor of the 3D Arts Program and the Head of the Visual Arts Department at this
private college preparatory school. In addition to maintaining the academy’s robust sculpture studio, I designed and delivered
instruction in painting and drawing, ceramics, wood and metal working, mixed media sculpture, 3D digital design, sewing/fiber
art, studio art foundational skills, and more. Further duties included making and adhering to annual budgets, hiring of staff,
creating and hosting many arts-based events within the Palm Beach community, organizing and hosting regular exhibitions of
student artwork, and collaborating with both local and international visiting artists.

2012- 2013 Instructor of Kinetic Sculpture and Ceramics, The Gateway School, New York, NY

At this position I lead a year-long enrichment course for students which explored the exciting creative area where art and science
meet- Kinetic Sculpture. The class culminated in the exhibition of our giant collaborative Rube Goldberg Machine structure, and
entry into an international online competition. In December of 2012 through June of 2013, I also provided instruction in a broad
range of sculptural and hand-building techniques in clay during a weekly Ceramics class.
2007 – 2013 Instructor of 2D & 3D Studio Arts, Prop Making, and Engineering Arts
Julian Krinsky International Summer Enrichment Programs, Philadelphia, PA
For 6 years I served as art teacher for the Julian Krinsky international summer enrichment program. Courses were hosted at
various Philadelphia-area institutions including Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Villanova Colleges, and the Shipley School.
In this role, I conducted many diverse classes for both international and local learners. I designed and delivered classes on topics
of sculpture, studio art, theatrical design, painting and drawing, and engineering (kinetic) arts. Coursework has included prop
making and set design for student theatrical productions, the construction of “massive models,” clay sculptures with wire
armatures, spray paint stencil design, plaster casting, life drawing, painting, and more.

Bendel holiday window display on 5th Ave.

As part of this non-profit art collective, I performed work as a sculptor and set designer for ongoing experimental performances
taking place throughout New York City and the surrounding areas. The mission of this creative organization is to provide a
diverse audience of community members with the opportunity to experience the newest works of contemporary musicians,
composers, and multi-media visual artists.
2010 Designer and Fabricator, The Spoon Group, Rahway, NJ
Designed and constructed complex 3-dimensional paper scenery and characters for the 2010 Macy’s holiday window displays
nationwide, including exhibits for New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia.
