Artist Talk with Gina Phillips

in “Face to Face.” Gina Phillips is a mixed media, installation and narrative artist who grew up in Kentucky and has lived in New Orleans since 1995. The imagery, stories and characters of both regions influence her work. She started her career as a painter, but over the years, she has increasingly incorporated fabric and thread into her practice. The textiles used in Phillip’s portraits are sourced from family, friends and neighbors in her local community. Phillips earned a BFA in painting from the University of Kentucky in 1994. She continued her studies of painting in graduate school at Tulane University, where she received an MFA in 1997. In 2013 she was recognized by The Legacy Award, presented by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, which also presented a solo exhibition of her work that same year.
