The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans is celebrating its 50th anniversary with the debut of a new exhibition season and the return of its signature late-night White Linen celebration.
Opening August 1, Idyll: Pleasures of Summer will be on view in the CAC’s first-floor galleries through September. The group exhibition explores themes of freedom, identity, family, community and belonging through photography, painting and sculpture by 23 New Orleans artists. Featured artists include Andre Hubbard, Ashley Teamer, Ayo Scott, Bradley Sabin, Brikarri Williams, Cristina Molina, Ed Buckles, Gina Laguna, Jacob Reptile, Jay McKay, Jourdan Barnes, kai lumumba barrow, Kara Crowley, Kelsey Scult, Mattie Hanson, Nurhan Gokturk, Pippin Frisbie Calder, Renee Royale, Rodney Woods Jr., Ruth Owens, Ryan Leitner, Trenity Thomas and Vee Adams. The exhibition also includes three works from the CCH Pounder-Koné Collection.
“We’re very excited to debut this new season of programming, especially as we enter our 50th year of celebrating and showcasing local art and artists,” said Executive Director Raelle Myrick-Hodges. “Starting our new season with Idyll is an assurance of our dedication and commitment to continuing the legacy of putting New Orleans artists first.”
Following the annual Fidelity Bank White Linen Night gallery stroll on Julia Street, the CAC will host the return of White Linen Night: After Dark, the official after-party, from 9 p.m. to midnight on August 1 in its St. Joseph Street warehouse.
The event will feature The Stories of Us Residency installation, showcasing five large-scale “Talking Drums” sculptures by Annie Moran, Ashley Teamer, Ayo Scott, Monique Lorden and Teneille Prosper. Guests can also enjoy DJ sets from Pellow Talk and Legatron Prime, complimentary Mockly Pops vegan popsicles, a signature White Linen cocktail, and the welcome comforts of indoor air conditioning and plenty of seating after a day spent exploring the Julia Street galleries.
Tickets are $25, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Arts District New Orleans. A $40 package that includes admission and a one-year CAC membership is also available. For tickets to the White Linen After Dark Night event, click here.
