Through both abstract painting, and immersive installation spaces, I create metaphorical landscapes to confront challenging emotional experiences. Visual elements such as power lines and the deep recesses of the forest inspire the texture and movement of these self reflective spaces.

[lives & works – New Orleans, LA  :::  b. 1972, Queens, NY]

Ann Marie Auricchio (b. 1972, Queens, NY) lives and works in New Orleans, LA. Originating from a raw visceral space, her paintings put a lens on the power of vulnerability, giving form to external forces impinging on internal landscapes. Her paintings are not quiet spaces of reflection, but rather a place to hold the loud energy of confrontation. Auricchio earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and has attended residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Ferrara Showman Gallery (New Orleans, LA), the Spring/Break Art Show NYC, and Michael Warren Contemporary (Denver, CO) Her work has been exhibited nationally in commercial galleries as well as with alternative and institutional spaces such as White Columns NY, the Painting Center NY, the Alexandria Museum LA, and the Contemporary Art Center New Orleans. Auricchio previously held a 25-year tenure in the entertainment industry as a scenic artist and designer for film, theater, and television. Included in many private collections, her work belongs to several corporate collections, including Azamara Cruise Lines and the Scott Companies. Her work has been reviewed in the Denver Post, and Whitehot Magazine. A forthcoming solo show is scheduled for Fall 2025 at the Wiregrass Museum in Alabama.

Artist Statement

I create emotionally driven paintings that explore the intersection of psychological and physical experiences. With a predisposition for anxiety, my work is about leaning into
the discomfort of navigating an often tumultuous world.

My first panic attack felt like a tidal wave engulfing my entire body. Simultaneou consumed in physicality and disassociation. The sound of branches crackling beneath my feet as I walked became my tether to reality. This fight-or-flight state is fueled personal trauma , and by the many external stresses we all face in our ever-shifting world of social, political, and environmental crises.

Within my work I employ metaphors of imagined geological and atmospheric upheavals to reflect the emotional impact of external forces through abstract gestures I incorporate textures and color palettes derived from natural elements such as vegetation, water, and fire. The combination of these components expose the fragil balance between reality and perception. I begin with a drawn, painted, or assembled mark which creates a prompt to unlock a cognitive response, mimicking the subtle ways that we process information and events. Then I build a space in which to navigate the memories and feelings that have been stirred.

Large scale acrylic and oil paintings engage directly with my body, confronting overwhelming feelings head on. Meanwhile small works on paper allow me to access an intimate meditative perspective. My newest work examines and recontextualizes experiences of processing and place with the construction of paper collages and subsequent reinterpretation through large irregularly shaped oil paintings on panel. Throughout each medium, my work puts a lens on the power of vulnerability giving form to uncomfortable realities we face within and in opposition to ourselves.
