JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is pleased to annouce Dimensional Patterning: Sewn Constructions by ANITA COOKE. The exhibition is on view from October 1 through November 28, 2009 with an opening artist reception on Saturday October 3rd from 6-9pm in conjunction with Capitol One's Art For Arts' Sake which draws over 20,000 art lovers the New Orleans Arts District.
Dimensional Patterning: Sewn Constructions is her first exhibition in five years and continues her exploration of of the juxtaposition of the forces of order and chaos. Trained a ceramicist/sculptor, Cooke's current body of work references this history. The "sewn constructions" appear, at first glance, to be paintings, when upon further inspection, they bear the marks of the sculptor. Cooke, ever meticulous in her attention to detail, has created large scale works made of up literally hundreds of individually hand-cut and hand-painted strips of canvas sewn into "dimensional patterns".
ANITA COOKE has lived and worked as an artist and teacher in New Orleans for almost thirty years. She has a BFA in Ceramics from Kent State University in Ohio and an MFA in Ceramics and Sculpture from Tulane University. She has taught Ceramics at Tulane University, Loyola University, Stephen F. Austin University and at Western Michigan University. Cooke has exhibited her work across the US and in New Orleans for over twenty five years. She is a recipient of the Louisiana Fellowship Award and her work is in several prominent collections.
