assemblage sculpture: Leather work boot with exaggerated sole, authentic vintage Minneapolis police badge, Police sign used to hang off a car door (most small towns did not have the money for their own police cars so each officer would take turns hanging this on an available vehicle). Antique shoe shine box reconstructed into a jail, 3 wood hand carved men, hand painted flag on wood.

The title references the 8 minute and 46-second video of George Floyd being choked to death. The video went viral and ignited worldwide protests. The enormous outpouring of rage is evidence that George Floyd's death is part of the much broader problem of systemic racism. The exaggerated heel on the boot is meant to draw attention to the magnitude of the problem – that people of color have been crushed beneath the heel of racial injustice for centuries. The Minneapolis police badge and the Police car door sign emphasize the role of police brutality. The stereotype shoeshine box doubles as a jail, where people of color are incarcerated disproportionately to their numbers in America. And the American flag, with its new black border & stripe representing all Americans, is hopefully the future.

This piece was finished right before the 2020 presidential election and references Trump's raucous political rallies, which are designed to whip up his conservative base. Raucous rallies have been part of American culture almost from its inception, but usually, they were connected to religious revival events. In our time they have also been used to whip up conservative supporters into a patriotic frenzy, reminiscent of rallies in Nazi Germany.

Painted as a response to the ongoing conversations about race and policing in the United States in 2020, Having Missed the Mark with Our Grief focuses on the problem of the “But what about…” conversations that too often accompany discussions about systemic racism and discrimination. From the nonsensical All Lives Matter crowd to the virtue-signaling of more well-meaning, empathetic groups, people outside of BIPOC communities too frequently seem ready to misdirect valuable attention away from meaningful change toward their own unthreatened subcultures.

Having Missed the Mark with Our Grief presents a mourning white male pulled from The Death of Seneca hovering above the shore of Eaton’s Neck, far from an “X” drawn in the sand. The setting is simple and uncomplicated beyond the target on its shore. However, the forlorn figure draws the spotlight away from the marked terrain toward his dramatic presentation of suffering.

The main character of this painting finds himself mired in a pond as a sizeable storm approaches, and yet – instead of standing up and removing himself from the trouble – he chooses to focus on the discomfort of his wet clothing.

This child, attending to a minor nuisance rather than enacting a permanent solution, stands in as an icon of our current sociopolitical leadership – leadership which has defined our modern reality by its preference for constantly kicking the can on major issues (climate change, income inequality, various forms of discrimination, and so much more) as the rest of us are left to watch from the shore.

22 October 2020 (New Orleans, LA) JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is proud to announce, Inspiration in Isolation, a group exhibition of artworks from canceled or postponed exhibitions and artworks that were created by artists in quarantine during the COVID -19 pandemic. This exhibition will highlight the ways in which gallery artists have reflected on this period of global tumult, how they’ve adapted, and how they have been transformed by it.

Inspiration in Isolation features artwork from eighteen different local, national, and international artists working across a wide range of mediums including painting, assemblage, installation, sculpture, works on paper, and textile. What results is an exhibition that embodies different aspects of the human experience and generates a dialogue on how the human experience has been molded by current events. The artists in this group show reflect on topics ranging from solitude and human connection to police brutality and political unrest.

Inspiration in Isolation is the first of a two-part group exhibition which reviews the gallery’s entire artist programme. Part two, entitled New Year, New Art, will follow, opening January 2021, and will focus on artists who are new to the JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY roster.

Inspiration in Isolation will be on view from 4 November to 19 December 2020 with a rolling opening reception from 11 am – 7 pm on 7 November and 5 December in conjunction with the Arts District New Orleans’ First Saturday Gallery Openings. For the December opening, JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY will be participating in Holiday Cheers, an Arts District-wide event featuring holiday décor, a coat drive for the needy, specialty cocktails from nearby restaurants, and a rolling art walk to spread holiday cheer!
