Re:Representation - Part II - Curated by Dan Cameron - Exhibitions - FERRARA SHOWMAN GALLERY

Press Release

20 October 2021 (New Orleans, LA) JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY proudly presents Re: Representation, a two-part exhibition unveiling new and recent work by twelve American painters. Curated by Dan Cameron, this show brings together artists whose individual styles represent multiple approaches to achieving representation. Part One will be on view from 20 October through 11 December with monthly receptions coinciding with the Arts District of New Orleans’ (ADNO) First Saturday Gallery Openings from 6-8 PM – with an opening reception on Saturday, 6 November and closing reception will be on Saturday, 4 December. Part Two will be on view from 15 December through 11 February with an opening reception on Saturday, 8 January and closing reception on Saturday, 5 February.

Cameron writes of his exhibition:

This two-part exhibition brings together new work by a dozen American painters whose individual styles represent parallel approaches to issues of representation. From realist figuration passed down through the classical tradition to quasi-abstraction rooted in cartoons, material culture and photography, Re: Presentation purposefully juxtaposes artworks from separate genres to explore the boundaries of contemporary stylistic pluralism, and hopefully underscore the deeper connections between works that at first appear to represent very different traditions. Most of the participating artists in Re: Presentation will be showing their work in New Orleans for the first time, and in several cases are represented by paintings created especially for the exhibition.

By taking on the broader problem of how representation works across a range of styles and genres, Re: Representation also reflects on increasingly urgent questions regarding the act of representation, such as who has agency to represent which norms and categories of figures, historical scenes, and even abstract symbols.

Re: Representation is organized by New York-based curator Dan Cameron, best-known locally for founding Prospect New Orleans in 2007 and organizing the first two and a half editions of the international triennial through early 2012. Re: Presentation is also the second cycle of exhibitions organized by Cameron for Jonathan Ferrara Gallery to coincide with Prospect, the first pair being Sin Título and Oscillation, which ran alongside Prospect.4 in late 2017 and early 2018.

The participation of artists in Re: Representation is courtesy of Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, Lyles & King, Yossi Milo Gallery, Pierogi, Miguel Abreu Gallery, Miles McEnery Gallery, and Zürcher Gallery, all of New York City.
