SANDY CHISM

JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is proud to announce, Sliver, a solo exhibition by painter SANDY CHISM. The exhibition opens on Saturday March 6, 2010 with an artist reception from 6 to 9 PM.   Sliver will feature new paintings by Sandy Chism who is well-known for her beautifully ethereal paintings that embrace the concept of the juxtaposition of opposites. Her work often incorporates organically derived metaphors to describe the opposites in nature; the cycle of life and death, the single versus the multiple, the micro versus the macro.   

In her own words:

  "These images of roller coasters, rocket trails and bees hover around the verge of change. Likewise, compositions and variations in the speed of working hinge on change. Both the process and the series vacillate between full and fast and then suddenly still and empty. Like the feeling you get in your chest when you swing too high, careening into space and then briefly, you_re just hanging there."    

 Sliver by Sandy Chism opens on Saturday March 6, 2010 with an artist’s reception from 6 to 9 PM and will be on view through April 14, 2010    

SANDY CHISM is a Professor of Painting and Drawing in the Newcomb Department of Art at Tulane University. This is her fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. Her work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. In 2000, a ten-year survey of her work was exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Center, entitled Sandy Chism: A Survey and included paintings as well as large scaled mixed media installations. Her work is featured in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation in Los Angeles, the Claiborne Collection in Louisiana and Liquitex Paint.   

Ms. Chism's work has been reviewed in Art in America, The Times-Picayune, Gambit Weekly, Forum Magazine and the New Orleans Art Review.
