“Ode to Klimt’s ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer I’’ bends gender expectations by casting a man as the woman in gold; artist Epaul Julien painted over a canvas print of e2’s photograph and incorporated gold leafing in order to achieve the one-of-a-kind final result. The remake challenges viewers to question why men must stay imprisoned in traditional masculinity? Who benefits from gatekeeping feminine beauty and softness?

medium: 24 x 19.3 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs

small: 16 x 12.9 inches, edition of 7, 2 APs

“Ode to Munch’s ‘The Scream’” depicts a non-binary subject trapped in an infinite scream against a New Orleans backdrop. This piece represents the silent pain of gender dysphoria constantly experienced by non-binary people as they traverse a binary world that would rather ignore their existence entirely.

medium: 24 x 19.7 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs

small: 16 x 13.1 inches, edition of 7, 2 APs

“Ode to Picasso’s 'Dora Maar’' is a self-portrait of e2 artist Elizabeth Kleinveld as the photographer and artist Dora Maar. Kleinveld was drawn to this particular image of Maar while grieving the death of her father in 2021; she was captivated by the sadness that seems to ooze from the canvas, how the sitter’s melancholia is obscured by the playful color contrast. For e2’s remake, artist E.Paul Julien painted directly over the photographic print of Kleinveld, emphasizing the masking of grief.

medium: 24 x 21.4 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs

small: 16 x 14.3 inches, edition of 7, 2 APs

"Ode to Van Gogh’s 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe’” is a self-portrait of e2 artist E.Paul Julien as the tortured artist. This piece was inspired by Julien’s own struggles with mental health issues during isolation during pandemic lockdown, as he found himself in a place where he could relate to the fragile mindset that Van Gogh experienced through most of his life.

large: 36 x 35 inches, edition of 3, 2 APs
medium: 24 x 23 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs

“Ode to Rockwell’s ‘Freedom from Want’” rejects Rockwell’s portrayals of traditional nuclear families, as well as the material hardships that many trans and gender non-conforming people face every day in our country. From income and housing inequality, to employment and healthcare discrimination, the reality of many transgender people is a stark contrast to Rockwell’s archetypal holiday scene of American abundance.

medium: 24 x 19 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs
small: 16 x 13 inches, edition of 7, 2 APs

“Ode to Rockwell’s ‘Freedom of Worship’” addresses the rampant religious discrimination against non-Christians in America by depicting a unified scene of religious worship, symbolizing the need for collective solidarity. Rockwell’s original piece mainly centered on depictions of older white Christians, whereas our remake presents a diverse cast of ethnicities, ages, and faiths existing peacefully side-by-side.

medium: 24 x 18 inches, edition of 5, 2 APs
small: 16 x 12 inches, edition of 7, 2 APs

“Ode to Rockwell’s ‘Freedom from Fear’” addresses immigrant rights and ongoing damage to families literally torn apart by U.S. immigration policy. The concerned father in our remake holds a copy of the Times-Picayune to impress upon viewers the homegrown fear that our undocumented neighbors in Louisiana and across the country live with every day.

“Ode to Rockwell’s ‘Freedom of Speech’” directly addresses rampant Islamophobia in America by depicting a young Muslim woman speaking up in a town hall. The image represents the power that comes with raising one’s voice, as well as the need for diverse perspectives.

Press Release

15 February 2023 (New Orleans, LA) JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY is pleased to announce Everything Changes, the third solo exhibition of Amsterdam and New Orleans-based artist duo E2 – Kleinveld & Julien. In the artists’ continued exploration of revising and recontextualizing art historical masterpieces, the latest suite of interdisciplinary, photographic works focuses on Modern virtuosos: Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, and Norman Rockwell. Most notably, this collection of eight new works distinguishes and unveils innovations in their process techniques as they begin to incorporate painting into the prints. Everything Changes will debut their first-ever, unique painting.

The artists state . . .

Everything Changes”, the latest phase of our ongoing series In Empathy We Trust, presents odes to iconic images from the Modern and Contemporary art periods. Our artistic process during Everything Changes was heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the inescapable upheaval brought about by this once-in-a-lifetime event. This major societal shift alongside ongoing social unrest compelled us to further explore the distorted realities permeating American culture and, consequently, veiling oppression of marginalized communities. With lockdown restrictions disrupting our usual process of gathering for photoshoots, we also began playing with new approaches for our work. As a result, our latest iteration marks a new technique exploration, with completely over-painting atop of select prints, adding an additional layer of distortion to an already-altered reality.

The title for this show takes inspiration from one of our favorite Frida Kahlo quotes: “Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.” The pandemic fostered a collective understanding of just how malleable and fragile our reality is. Our perceptions, our personal routines, and our culture as a whole – these realities are never guaranteed stasis, and the only way to move forward is to evolve, both as artists and individuals. The pieces in this show invite viewers to embrace the inevitability of change and the natural discomfort of re-examining their expectations of how a work of art – and by extension, a culture – should look.

The process of creating an E2 image has always involved intense collaboration, and the images here would not be possible without stellar teamwork. We would especially like to thank Cameron Wood for his extensive digital post-production and our wonderful models.

E2 – Kleinveld & Julien, a collaboration between New Orleans artists Elizabeth Kleinveld and Epaul Julien, re-imagines iconic images from art history to challenge the insularity of the Western art canon. Kleinveld and Julien share a mutual interest in issues of social justice and a belief in the power of empathy and images to change perceptions, minds, and hearts. Their ongoing series In Empathy We Trust re-envisions the work of old master painters by re-casting subjects of marginalized identities, beginning with the Flemish Primitives and spanning nearly 600 years through the 20th century. E2 hopes their remakes inspire viewers to question their own perceptions and indeed, to see the world anew.

The exhibition will be on view from 25 February through 8 April 2023 with an opening reception on Saturday 4 March and closing reception on Saturday 1 April - both coinciding with the Arts District of New Orleans’ (ADNO) First Saturday Gallery Openings from 5 – 9 PM.
